Nature Friendly Vacations in the English Countryside

If you’re traveling to England, of course the historic city of London should not be missed out, but the countryside has much to offer for nature enthusiasts. There is beautiful scenery to be found in England’s national parks and nature reserves. The Lake District, the Peak District, the Norfolk Broads, Exmoor and Dartmoor all offer wonderful opportunities for nature friendly holidays.

Try camping in the national parks, or walking one of England’s long distance footpaths. There are mountains to climb and rivers to swim in, forests to explore and of course many ocean beaches, with cliff trails, caves and tide pools. There’s plenty of opportunity to try watersports such as canoeing, sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, or land based outdoor sports such as mountain biking and horseback riding. A holiday in Devon, in England’s countryside, offers so many outdoor activities. Try orienteering or hiking in national parks, or the gentler, child friendly alternative of letterboxing on Dartmoor, to combine a fun family activity with walking through beautiful scenery, or visit one of the wildlife related family attractions for toddlers in Devon.

The coasts and countryside are popular for wildlife watching. Basking sharks, dolphins and porpoises can be seen off the coast of Devon and Cornwall, while birdwatchers find puffins and other seabirds on Lundy Island and the Scilly Isles. Wildlife and birdwatching cruises in Devon offer good opportunities to see these. The Norfolk broads are also very popular for birdwatching. Dartmoor is well known for its miniature ponies, while in the North of England it is still possible to find rare red squirrels. Throughout the country, there are nature reserves and animal sanctuaries, farm attractions for families, safari parks such as Longleat, and zoos such as Bristol and Paignton zoos.

So visit the historic cities and country towns in your travels, but visit the English countryside and you’ll get a more complete view of England.
